Manufacturing Is Critical for Many State Economies


In the past quarter-century, the geographic distribution of manufacturing has shifted—in some cases quite dramatically. While it was once concentrated in the Northeast and Midwest, manufacturing is now more broadly distributed.

At 30%, Oregon and Indiana trump all other states in the union for manufacturing as a share of state gross domestic product. With the exception of Florida, all states in the Deep South have manufacturing output shares in the double digits, led by Louisiana with 23%.
