The U.S. Is Losing Export Market Share

U.S. exports of manufactured goods face strong competition in many markets and particularly from China, which has become a leading exporter in chemicals, textiles, office and telecommunications equipment, and electronic products.

The U.S. share of global manufactured exports declined from 14% in 2000 to 9% in 2013, while China’s rose from 5% to 18%; the EU share slipped from 16% to 15%. Thus, although U.S. exports in manufactured goods have grown steadily in recent years, we have lost market share to even more rapidly growing exports from China and other emerging markets.
